Motherhood
As a mother of six, I’ve heard it all: “How do you juggle after-school activities?” “What’s your trick for managing tantrums, sibling squabbles, and mealtime meltdowns?” Over the years, I’ve felt the tension between the glossy promises of parenting books and the messy, beautiful chaos of real-life parenting.
I’ll never forget one of my lowest moments—sitting on the bathroom floor, tears streaming down my face, cradling my colicky 8-week-old. At the time, I was a third-year psychology student, majoring in children and family studies. I was immersed in developmental theories and attachment parenting principles, yet I felt like I was failing. The textbooks painted an idealised picture of parenting, but nothing prepared me for the exhaustion, the self-doubt, or the real-life complexities of raising a baby while balancing my studies.
That moment taught me something profound: there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to parenting. It’s deeply personal, shaped by culture, values, and the unique needs of each family. Strategies that work seamlessly in one context might feel completely unworkable in another. Recognising and adapting to these differences is key to finding practical, sustainable solutions.
That realisation inspired my mission to bridge the gap between theory and practice, helping parents navigate the challenges of modern family life with strategies that honour their values and circumstances.
Over the years, I’ve developed expertise in understanding cognition and how it affects learning, both in children and adults. I’ve reflected on how classical psychological theories—such as those of Piaget, Vygotsky, and Skinner—can be adapted and applied to modern-day parenting. By merging these foundational principles with contemporary insights into developmental psychology, I’ve been able to develop strategies that cater to the individual needs of children while nurturing a deeper understanding of how their minds grow and learn in real life.
Balancing this with the needs of a family is no easy feat, but with the right strategies, it’s possible to create a harmonious family environment where everyone feels heard and supported.
That realisation inspired my mission to bridge the gap between theory and practice, helping parents navigate the challenges of modern family life with strategies that honour their values, adapt to developmental stages, and accommodate multiple interests.
